Santa Fe Dr / C-470 Construction
CDOT has started Phase I for the motor-vehicle flyover from southbound US 85 to eastbound C-470. This flyover will be located where the current bike/multi-modal trail exists. The majority of the trail between US 85 and the High Line Canal crossing just east of Erickson Blvd will be reconstructed and repositioned approximately 75 ft to the south of its current alignment. A grade-separated, bike-path bridge over Erickson Blvd will also be constructed during this phase. Completion of Phase I is anticipated for spring 2012.
The current project under construction, Phase I, does not build the grade-separated crossing under US 85. That crossing is to be built under Phase II, which does not have design or construction dollars at this time. The at-grade crossing of Santa Fe Dr will remain after Phase I is completed. CDOT / C-470 Trail Update
CDOT completed the C-470 improvements funded by stimulus funds this past December 2010. The retaining wall behind Park Meadows Mall along the trail was removed and rebuilt with drains for the water from the highway to go under the trail. This should eliminate the mud and debris that has collected on the trail in recent years after storms. The two box-culvert tunnels in Jefferson County near Chatfield Reservoir were both raised several feet; so the trail is now above the water level.

Bike Friendly Legislation
Bike Lanes in Highlands Ranch
Douglas County Public Works painted the bike-lane logo onto the main arterial shoulders this past fall. This increased the amount of marked bike lanes in Highlands Ranch up to 114 miles in 2010; in 2008 years ago we had 0! What a great start to Douglas County bicycle-friendly status.
Share the Trails
Please remember to share the trail as you are using the bike trails around Douglas County. We are hearing complaints from cyclists who are unable to use a fair share of the trails due to other cyclists riding two abreast and not moving over when being passed from fore or aft. Please review our Share the Road page.
Waterton Canyon Closure through February 2012
Bicyclists will not be able to utilize the Waterton Canyon service road to the base of Strontia Springs Reservoir to access the start of the Colorado Trail to Durango.Canyon owner, Denver Water, is closing public access to use the service road to construct a large pipeline; heavy truck traffic will be transporting sediment that built up in the reservoir. The closure will continue through February 29, 2012. Colorado Trail users will still have access to the trail through the Indian Creek Trailhead on Colorado 67, located west of Sedalia. Bicycle Douglas County will keep you posted of any changes to the plan or schedule.
