News: Elephant Rock Report: Two BDC volunteers gave out ~250 CO bike maps, 25 BDC fliers but got only 4 new email contacts. Douglas County Public Work has completed re-stripping on Monarch Blvd with increased width of the shoulder from Daniels Gate south to Castle Pines Parkway. They are also adding Share the Road signs to the top 10 county roads that BDC identified last year that needed STR signs. Look for these new changes and enjoy the results of BDCs hard work. Call Douglas County Public Works if you have concerns about shoulder cleaning or shoulder stripping. BDC Chair, Judy Siel met with CO State Highway Commissioner Steve Parker, CDOT Betsy Jacobson, Bicycle CO Dan Grunig, and Bike Jeff co Dave Evans in May. Group discussion about Referendums C & D on the fall ballot for the state to keeps tax refund $$. This money would be used to improve highways and better shoulders throughout the state. They are asking bicyclists to support these referendums to improve conditions for motorists and bicyclists using roadways around the state. Commissioner Parker suggested bike groups could tap private foundations to fund bicycle facilities. Parker is formulating a master plan for bike lanes on their roads. Parker received a grant to push this schedule 3 years up and they are looking for your input on their plan. Toby Spunk, Douglas County Open Space: Hidden Mesa between Castle Rock and Franktown (north of CO 86) will be opened this summer. Spruce Mountain is not yet bike ready; the trail still has 4-8 grass covering and will be awhile before ready for mountain biking. Castle Rock is planning changes to west frontage road on I-25, and Founders Parkway reconstruction.
