Meeting Minutes and News

April 12, 2004

Guest speakers:

Laurie, a representative from the Emily Griffith Center presented information on their sponsorship ride Road Ramble.  The Road Ramble ride is held in late August near Larkspur. It includes 12, 34, 66 and 100-mile courses that are fully supported and sound excellent – information can be obtained at http://www.roadramble.com/.

Toby Sprunk the Douglas County Natural Resource Specialist presented information on the Douglas Counties Open Space program.  He shared exciting plans for future trail openings including some near and possibly even through a section of Roxborough State Park that will eventually connect to Indian Creek mountain bike trails.  Although Toby seemed very positive on bike access many of the properties are not solely controlled by Douglas County Open Space and due to these partnerships many will remain off limits to bikes.  Open Space Dept is looking for alternative trailheads to be accessed by bikes.

Club business:

The club voted to procure 50 T-shirts with club funds.  T-shirts will be used to promote club activities – see trail repair project below if you want one of these never before released T-shirts for your private collection.

TV station DC8 is running the bike safety video and providing the club with public exposure.

Judy shared some excellent news on re-striping of the bike lanes at the intersection of Quebec and Lincoln.  The engineers have been very responsive to our input and deserve a huge thank-you.  If you have other problem areas, let BDC know since we have a good working relationship with the Public Works Dept.

Our second annual Trail Repair Project will be held on May 8th   8:00-12:00 – all BDC members will receive a free T-shirt from the club (so join and volunteer).  Highlands Ranch Metro Districts will be providing heavy equipment and materials.  The project will be improving/repairing the rutted crossing on the C470 trail just east Santa Fe, where the trail crosses the private dirt road, clean the tunnel at the top of the hill and the dip at the bottom.  This will be an excellent opportunity for all to improve our riding conditions.  Metro Districts will be providing snacks and drinks. The more volunteers we get the more we can get done and the less time it will take so bring friends and family.

Treads in Parker is looking for volunteers to help with their breakfast on the Cherry Creek trail on Bike to Work Day.  If you are interested please contact Judy at judy@bicycledouglascounty.org.

Elephant Rock Ride (June 6th) has offered BDC a volunteer spot that is worth ~$800 to the club if we can staff an aid station or road marshals for the ride.  Please let Judy know if you are interested, we need 20-25 volunteers!!  Volunteers will receive a T-shirt and free meal at the Elephant Rock Party.

The club decided to give each of the Douglas County commissioner candidates a biking related questionnaire.  Responses will be shared via email, letters to the editor; a possible endorsement by the club will be made prior to the election in November.  A bike friendly commissioner is our goal!

“I Bike and I Vote” will be our motto this election year!        Next meeting May 10th.
