Bicycle
Douglas County
Meeting Minutes 2/9/2004
- C-470 Corridor Update by Jim Paulmeno, Environmental
Manager CDOT; Alan Brown, Deputy Project Manager PBSJ; and Gayle Crockett,
Wilson & Co. Alan Brown discussed the Environmental Assessment (EA)
for C-470, an EA is required by the FHWA. The purpose of the EA is to
determine solutions that minimize congestion from Kipling Parkway to I-25,
reduce traveler delay and improve reliability for corridor users.
Families of solutions are: additional lanes, express lances, mass
transit, mobility enhancement, or no action. The full set of
alternatives are being screened down to the few best alternatives. The
upcoming open houses on Feb. 23, 24, & 26 as advertised in the local
papers will showcase the early alternative and combinations for everyone
to see and make comments about this step. The project selection will not
be decided for ~1 year. Alan noted that the bike trail is part of the
mobility enhancements. Improvements for C-470 trail would only occur as
part of improvements to an interchange reconstruction. They are not
anticipating interchange reconstruction other than Santa Fe at this
time. Comments from BDC about the Colorado trail crossing at grade
without a stoplight; and Santa Fe interchanges as being the most dangerous
and difficult for bicyclists along the trail. Alan and Gayle encouraged
everyone to stay involved by attending the C-470 Open Houses later this
month and letting them know your concerns or checking their website: www.c-470.info ~ one week after the open
houses. They received comments from cyclists at the first open house last
fall and look forward to our continued input.
- Dave Evans, Bike Jeffco presented an early draft (29-page)
of the condition of the C-470 trail (from I-25 west to I-70) that was
completed last fall. Dave would like any feedback on this draft or if you
have a specific area that you want to address before the report is
finalized; send to Dave at dge999@comcast.net.
Judy Siel has a copy of this draft, contact her at judy@bicycledouglascounty.org
if you would like to review.
- Boulder County “Shoulder Initiative” was presented as a
possible solution for Douglas County. A few pictures of Cherryvale Road before and after Boulder County’s shoulder addition. A letter about this
initiative was sent last week to Douglas County Commissioners and Public
Works Dept. engineers. No comment or response about this suggestion for
adding shoulders to Douglas County has been received yet.
- Irina Donaldson has volunteered to be our BDC “Mountain
Bike Champion”. Irina is developing a list of problems, potential
solutions and goals. Shortly a questionnaire will be emailed to all BDC
members and your participation is needed to help guide our advocacy group
is prioritizing where to spend our energy on mountain bike issues. A
survey completed by Bicycle Colorado at last fall’s Velo Swap for mountain
bike concerns were:
·
47% keeping trails maintained and open,
·
24% reduced user conflict,
·
18 % access to trails near home,
·
11% more technical challenging trails.
What are your concerns? Look for a
mountain bike survey soon from BDC.
