Meeting Minutes and News

November 19, 2003

Guest speaker:

The guest speaker for the meeting was David Krutsinger, RTD Bike Coordinator, who gave us an update on RTDs plans for Fastracks and the Union Station bike station.  The Fastracks plan for the south area is to add 9,000 more parking spaces and more stations along the current Santa Fe route and the upcoming I-25 route.  Also they plan to add an additional car to each train.  The entire Fastracks project is projected to be completed by year 2017.

RTD received no acceptable proposals for the Union Station bike station so it was decided to roll the station into the Fastracks plan and make the station a permanent “Multi Model Transit Hub” to be completed in 2017.

David also discussed that bikes are allowed on the Light Rail with a permit, which is easily obtainable on the RTD website.  There is a short test that must be taken to get a permit.  The test may be taken, as many times as necessary then a temporary permit will be issued immediately.  Bikes are not allowed on the Light Rail during peak hours and during popular and crowded event periods.

Club business:

Please send Judy the name of any roads you feel would benefit from “Share the Road” signs.

TV station DC8 is willing to do a bike safety video as a public Service Announcement.

Judy will give us updates on the fundraiser Bernie Greenberg of HRCC is proposing.

Benefits for dues-paying members were discussed including discounts at local merchants or a small gift.  Asking local bike shops to give a one-year membership with the purchase of a bike in the hope that people would renew after the first year was also discussed.  It was proposed that the dues remain the same as last year except the amount for couples would change from $40.00 to $30.00 a year.

As a way to raise funds for the club, Janet mentioned that Bike Colorado provides attended bike parking at events such as “Taste of Colorado” and collects donations for the service. Also manning a booth at rides such as “Elephant Rock” could bring in funds.

Editorials in the Herald regarding the double white lines were brought up and members thought it would be a good idea for us to write letters to the Herald in response to those letters.  It was noted that per Colorado law those lanes have never been turn lanes.

Check web site for the date and time of upcoming town meetings and attend if possible.

Gary’s challenge for the next meeting, 12/15/03 is to bring a bike friend that is not associated with our club yet.  Also remember to bring a wrapped “white elephant” (or better) from your bike gear supplies.
